Spring 2006 - Poison Control

As the weather warms and spring arrives we all want to get outdoors and work on our gardens and yards. Our pets tend to follow us outside, including some cats. They may want to climb a tree or scratch in the dirt. We also bring the outdoors into our homes by adding spring and Easter flowers to the decor.

Cats are curious by nature and want to check everything out. We, as responsible pet owners, must protect them from potential harm. It is our job to keep them healthy and happy and comfy. Would you know what to do if your feline nibbled on a plant or flower? Do you know what plants and flowers are dangerous for cats? What if they started vomiting or having seizures? What if it is after hours or the weekend and your Vet is closed? Do you know the NATIONAL ANIMAL POISON CONTROL CENTER number or other animal poison control numbers?

The springtime lily can be deadly to your kitty. There are several different types of lilies that are dangerous including the EASTER LILY, TIGER LILY, RUBRUM LILY, JAPANESE SHOW LILY, and the DAY LILY(some species can cause kidney failure). Protect your feline from these lilies!

Plants can be dangerous too. The 10 most common poisonous plants to animals are MARIJUANA, SAGO PALM, LILIES, TULIP/NARCISSUS BULBS, AZALEA/RHODODENDRON, OLEANDER, CASTER BEAN, CYCLAMEN, KALANCHOE, and YEW. Of course there are several other plants, flowers, and substances that are toxic to a cat. This is just a partial list. Please be aware of the environment around you and what your kitty may come into contact with that could be potentially harmful to him!

There are several animal poison control centers that you can call for help. They also have websites that you can go to for more information and help. Please write them down and keep them handy in case of an emergancy.
